The March (2005) Hus Happenings had a story about "The Backsticher" by Charles Ferrel. It touched home as our quilters have a similar story to share. It is a true story dating back several years. We will try to tell you the whole story as we can recall it.
The Hus Quilters
We are the Hus Quilter's that meet on Tuesdays. We enjoy visiting and sharing our happy times and sorrows. We quilt to sell at the Fall Festivals as well as quilt for other people who do not want to undertake the big job of doing a large quilt.
We too had a 90+ year old lady who loved to be with us and we dearly loved her because she was always happy.
Unfortunately, she would backstitch, and because of failing eyesight would stitch twice in one place. On quilts that were done for others, we could not let her stitch on these quilts.
A printed top was donated and scraps of batting were stitched together. We put the pieces on the frame and elected one person each week to stitch with her while the other ladies worked on a big quilt.
The quilt that "Mrs. Bee" worked on was finished, bound, and put on sale for half of the price of other baby quilts. It was now for sale at the Fall Festival.
One young lady came and asked me why that quilt was so much less. I told her about the 90+ year old lady who worked on it. She said, "What a beautiful story, I must have the quilt!"
Who made thing right for us? God was with us and gave us the foresight to cope with the problem. She continued to be with us almost to the end of her life. We benefited by hearing her cheerful laugh and contagious smile. God answered our prayers!
