Vision Task Force - Leadership

Description of Leaders: (from the Bible and the Book of Order)

A person who knows and follows Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour, and who shows evidence in their lives of the "fruit of the Spirit" as described in Galatians 5:22-23: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.

Leadership Activities:

Speaking and teaching the Word of God, influencing the character of followers, keeping the unity of the Spirit (by praying, not gossiping, and avoiding useless arguments), building up the Body of Christ, serving others, giving, administering discipline, speaking the truth in love, preparing God?s people for their works of service, and giving attention to prayer.

Leadership Positions:

  1. All Session elders
  2. All Deacons on Deacon Board or commission as a Deacon for a specific ministry
  3. All Pastors
  4. All Trustee leaders
  5. All small group fellowship leaders
  6. All members recognized by Session as leaders in a mission activity

Leadership Expectations:

  1. All leaders in encouragement groups (groups of three to four persons who meet regularly to encourage one another in their work and in discipleship growth).
  2. All leaders attend worship regularly.
  3. All leaders be in a Bible study, a Sunday School class, a prayer group, a fellowship group, a mission activity, or a combination of these.
  4. Each Elder and Deacon given a share of names from the membership to pray for regularly.
  5. Leaders take turns praying for worship services (this would be phased in over time as more leaders are able to do this).
  6. All leaders meet with the Pastor and/or staff regularly for equipping, training, and communication (possibly every two months).
  7. All leaders meet together with the Pastor and staff in a yearly retreat (for those who cannot make the retreat a Session approved substitute will be allowed).

The Four Missional Goals for Leadership:

  1. To emphasize leadership in terms of commitment and calling rather that filling an office and meeting a duty.
  2. Use the Biblical and Book of Order expectations for leaders as guidelines for selecting and developing leaders.
  3. Develop a Biblically based process for every leader to identify and develop the "gifts of the Spirit" they have been given.
  4. Reorganize Session, Deacons, and Trustees to support the development and exercise of missional leadership at Hus Church. Deacons and Trustees will be asked to work on this, with the Session taking lead in the process.
